Vineyard

The Monte Rosso Vineyard spans 575 acres, making it the largest in the Moon Mountain District AVA. Less than half of it, 200 acres, is currently planted and 47 of those acres are historic vines with over 80 years of age. It is certified organic.

Our unique soil at Monte Rosso was created by the lava from Mount Veeder, which once covered the entire western side of the Mayacamas Mountain Range. Mount Veeder’s eruption gave way to our red hill loam soil, which is a very mineral rich volcanic ash soil, and very challenging for the cultivation of vines. Several feet below the surface are layers of shattered shale that were formed when the tectonic plates shifted millions of years ago, creating the different mountain ranges you see today.

We are proud to cultivate some of the oldest vines in the state of California, including Semillon planted in 1886, Zinfandel in 1893 and Cabernet Sauvignon planted in 1940 – the Los Niños block.
